I was curious as to whether my family had any connection to Whipple File Company - that would have been a remarkable coincidence! Some quick research shows that Whipple File was founded by Milton Dexter Whipple, a native of the Worcester area. There does not appear to be a connection with my Whipple ancestors.
This is the first I've ever heard of the Whipple File Company! My mother's side of the family was Whipples and goes back to pre-revolutionary days - there's a connection to the Whipple house in Ipswich. I want to know more about the Whipple File Company!
I'm happy to give you information about the Whipple File Company. It was in the mill complex in Ballardvale in 1859. William P. Pierce was the president of the company. They later were renamed the Whipple File & Steel Manufacturing Co. Whipple File & Steel Manufacturing Co. went bankrupt in 1867 and the company assets were assigned to Edward Page, John Beale, Thomas J. Horner all of Boston, and Thornton Lathrop of Milton, MA. You can also check out the Historic Preservation website for more information. It is a very searchable website. (preservation.mhl.org) Just type in Whipple File to see the buildings and information. We also have some photos in our collection. You can email us at info@andoverhistoryandculture.org with any questions you might have.
