I LOVE the images. What a sight it was to see the Snow Loader on Main Street. Can you imagine these folks seeing today's snow blowers! Air conditioning and snow blowers are among mankind's greatest inventions, in my humble opinion.

Great story (errr, post!)

A fascinating glimpse into early snow removal efforts. I have heard that, prior to the auto, towns simply used a roller to flatten the snow on the roads. Is there any documentation to support that?

Hi Roland, yes, pre-automobiles, snow on the roads was flattened with rollers. My husband, who grew up in western Colorado, said they used do to that in rural parts of the state when he was growing up.

Hi Elaine, Your "snow ladder" is a conveyor with buckets under power, i.e. a "Snow Loader" as depicted later in your article. Plows would push snow out of street to curb. Loader would convey it to truck that would take it away. Thus making room for parking vehicles. We still do that, just different machinery. Snow dump on High Street. Site of a long ago town dump for trash.

Hi Don, thank you for your comment. I didn't know there is a snow dump on High Street. Have to say, I do wonder where all the moved snow goes!
