In Guest Writer Martha Tubinis' first popcorn post, she explained that the origin of her posts was a research paper for her Material Culture Studies course. But what is "material culture?"
The video "what is a chair" is beautifully done and thought-provoking. The deconstruction of the Whirley Pop seems almost Freudian in its associations with emotions - wow!
Many years ago, I got involved in a project to increase the production of popcorn for a popcorn maker. They had the standard popcorn makers, similar to what one finds in a theater lined up in rows with operators tending them. They put the corn and ingredients in, turned the switch and went to another machine, this time to maybe dump the popped corn onto a conveyor. They tried a heated vibrating table, that began the cooking at one end with finished popcorn at the far end. It was a struggle - I don't know if it ever really worked. Possibly it was back to the tried-and-true cooker for that real hands-on popped corn flavor. Their product was very popular, and they needed more capacity.
Martha, I'm tryin' to drop a couple pounds here - and you've gotten me gobbling this stuff like I've never seed food before. What, hey, you only life once, right? Just wish I had larger hands to plow through my popcorn. Or, perhaps a larger bowl. hm-mmm, what to do???
Great series...write more! How do you feel about pistachio ce cream? Just sayin'...
There was nothing more multi-sensory than that first Cretors mobile popcorn machine...

They obviously needed a giant Whirley Pop Popper! (No, I am not getting paid for using their name lol)

Tom
haha Tom, so sorry! Yes, I love pistachio ice cream! Is there any other flavor?
I do have a hankerin' now and again for coconut or cherry vanilla. Both good, but seldom selected!
