Susan Bradley was a passionate watercolorist with an affinity for landscapes. Her husband, Leverett Bradley, rector of Andover's Christ Church, was a progressive husband, who supported her work.
I marvel at the architecture each time that I pass by Christ Church and often wondered about its back story. Andrea did a wonderful job in telling it. Well done indeed!
What a wonderful way to connect with those that came before you...your writing brings them to life. Really enjoy viewing your great great grandmother's artwork and looking forward to reading more about her and your family.
Thank you so much! Learning about them - and what obstacles women artists faced in the late 19th century has been an incredible journey! I hope people become open to the idea that there are a lot of wonderful women artists from that time period that are worth rediscovering.
Leverett's younger brother, Jeremiah Payson Bradley, joined shortly thereafter as a drummer boy. Some suspect he lied about his age. He couldn't have been more than twelve years old! Jeremiah had a long, distinguished military career. It seems that both brothers felt a strong sense of duty.
Very inspiring - could not stop reading. A fantastic example of a family with a long reach in their time, right up to ours. Forwarded to others including our daughter, Rebecca, a Middle school art teacher.
This is such a wonderful article and series of photographs! Thank you. I intend to share it with other Christ Church parishioners. The connection between the Bradleys and Sarah Wyman Whitman who designed so many beautiful stained glass windows for the church is the icing on the cake!

This was a fascinating piece. Thank you, Andrea.
PS. I did get a kick out of the 14 year Andover Civil War volunteer. Possibly an indication of things to come.

Thanks for your kind words and for sharing this article with other Christ Church parishioners. That would be wonderful!
Wonderful article on two great women artists and Rev. Bradley, all who contributed to Christ Church and the community.
Thank you so much!
