History through a local lens
We often think of “History” as something writ large: wars, politics, presidents and leaders, kings and queens, grand movements, rises and falls, world-changing events.
But in each of those world-changing events are people….human beings like us who lived and died, loved and worked, raised families, and struggled to survive day to day.
Local history is a microcosm of world events. How did new technology - like industrial mills, electricity, or automobiles - impact an individual’s life? How did social movements - democracy, abolition, voting rights - change a community?
Our goal with History Buzz is to relate the local to larger world stories. Can we see ourselves in these stories from the past? How does this local history story - about a small item in the collection - tell a larger story about social life? How does this one family’s story illustrate important social issues?
Whether you’ve always been a fan of history, or you tried to find a way out of your high school history class, we hope you’ll find a story here that intrigues you, makes you think, and inspires you.

Why “History Buzz?”
Funny you should ask. The History Center has a history with bees. Reverend Lorenzo L. Langstroth, inventor of the Langsroth Bee Hive (still widely used today), was a boarder in the Amos Blanchard house (the History Center’s home) when he was working on the hive design, around 1850.
