When I think about spring and gardening, I think about Bessie Goldsmith (1882-1974). Born and raised in Andover, Bessie was a self-proclaimed “dirt farmer” who, when asked about how she liked the Boston Flower Show famously replied, “Too much mink, not enough manure.”
This portrait of Bessie Goldsmith, in our collection, is by local artist Mary Jane Trumbore, and captures Bessie’s eccentric personality as much as it captures her love of gardening. At a time when it was appropriate for ladies to wear hats, white gloves, and dresses when they left the house, Bessie was often seen wearing her beret and knickers. Either coming from or going to her beloved garden on Elm Street.
As you look out at our rainy April weather, knowing that spring is truly right around the corner, maybe your thoughts turn to gardening. Looking for what new life is coming up in your garden. And if you’re like Bessie, your thoughts might eventually lead to manure.
What's growing in your garden?
